OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Business Premium Seats With Five Times the Usage

ChatGPT Business Premium costs $100 monthly on annual billing or $125 month-to-month, with five times the Standard usage.

OpenAI has made Premium seats generally available for ChatGPT Business, adding a higher-capacity option for employees who use ChatGPT Work and Codex heavily. Each Premium seat costs $125 per user on monthly billing or $100 per user per month when billed annually.

The new tier provides five times the included usage of a Standard seat and removes its five-hour usage limit. However, it does not make every ChatGPT model, tool, or agentic task unlimited. The underlying feature set is also largely the same: Premium changes how much included capacity a user receives, rather than unlocking a separate collection of applications.

Companies can mix Standard and Premium seats in one centrally managed workspace. That makes the launch most relevant to small and midsize teams whose usage is uneven—for example, a company in which a few developers or analysts run long agentic tasks while most employees use ChatGPT for routine work.

1. Premium Seats Are Now Generally Available

OpenAI first announced Premium seats on August 10, 2026, when the product was still waitlisted. The company updated its announcement on August 25 to say that the seats were generally available, and its live business-pricing page now offers both seat types.

Standard seats remain $25 per user per month on monthly billing or $20 per user per month when billed annually. Premium seats are $125 monthly or $100 per month with annual billing. In both cases, Premium costs exactly five times as much as Standard.

Both seat types include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. OpenAI’s pricing page also lists access across desktop, web, and mobile; connections to services including Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub, and Microsoft 365; workspace agents; usage analytics; spend controls; and centralized administration.

The launch therefore differs from a conventional feature-gated upgrade. A Standard user is not excluded from ChatGPT Work or Codex simply because a colleague has Premium. The higher-priced seat primarily provides more included usage and fewer interruptions for the person assigned to it.

OpenAI said expanded capacity had been a frequent request from Business customers. The company separately told The Register that customers wanted higher limits for deeper work on the Business plan.

2. The Price and Included Usage Both Increase Fivefold

OpenAI describes Premium as providing five times the usage of Standard, but its detailed limits documentation adds an important qualification: the higher included allowance applies to ChatGPT Work and Codex, while individual ChatGPT model allowances are separate.

Consumption is not measured as one fixed number of prompts. OpenAI says it depends on the selected model, the size of a task, its reasoning effort, and the amount of work performed. A large cloud task can therefore consume more capacity than a short local interaction.

For Standard seats, OpenAI currently estimates the following local-message ranges within a five-hour window:

  • GPT-5.6 Sol: 10–100 messages
  • GPT-5.6 Terra: 25–200 messages
  • GPT-5.6 Luna: 250–2,000 messages

Those figures are estimates, not guaranteed quotas. OpenAI does not publish a corresponding fixed Premium message table; instead, it states that Premium receives five times the included usage and is not constrained by the five-hour window. The company also advertises predictable weekly usage resets.

On the published prices, Premium is not a volume discount. Five times the subscription price buys five times the included capacity. Its practical value is that the capacity belongs to one user, preserving that person’s history, project context, permissions, and uninterrupted workflow inside the company workspace.

3. Removing the Five-Hour Limit Does Not Mean Unlimited Agents

The absence of a five-hour limit should not be read as unlimited use of reasoning models, ChatGPT Work, Codex, or other tools. OpenAI’s limits page explicitly distinguishes “virtually unlimited” Instant chat from reasoning, Pro, agentic work, and coding workloads.

Premium users can still exhaust their included allowance. When that happens, eligible tasks can continue by drawing from workspace credits, provided the workspace has credits available and its owner has enabled the necessary spending controls. Otherwise, the user must wait for the relevant allowance to reset or switch to another available option.

Included Premium usage cannot be converted into a fixed dollar or credit amount. Different models and tasks consume capacity at different rates, and included allowances remain separate from the shared credit pool.

Access also remains subject to abuse safeguards. OpenAI prohibits practices including automated data extraction, credential sharing, resale of access, and using a Business account to power third-party services. Temporary restrictions may still be applied when systems detect suspected misuse.

These distinctions matter for budgeting. A $100 or $125 Premium subscription sets the price of the included allowance, but it does not necessarily cap a workspace’s total spending if owners also authorize credit-based overage.

4. Mixed Seats Let Teams Concentrate Capacity

A ChatGPT Business workspace can contain Standard seats, Premium seats, or any mixture of the two. At least two paid seats are required, and one Standard plus one Premium satisfies that minimum.

That mixed configuration costs $150 per month on monthly billing. On annual billing, the equivalent price is $120 per month, charged as a $1,440 annual commitment. A two-person workspace using only Premium seats costs $250 monthly or $2,400 when billed annually.

Only workspace owners can purchase seats or change a member’s paid seat type. Owners can assign unused capacity, reassign seats between people, or swap a Standard and Premium assignment without purchasing another seat. Updated limits take effect immediately when existing paid seats are reassigned.

If no unused Premium seat exists, upgrading a Standard user requires payment of the prorated price difference for the rest of the billing cycle. Downgrades generally take effect at renewal unless an unused Standard seat is already available for an immediate reassignment.

Seats are billable capacity rather than permanent attributes of individual accounts. Removing a member frees the seat for someone else but does not reduce the paid subscription count. An owner must separately schedule the unwanted seat for removal, and the reduction takes effect at the next billing cycle.

This structure lets a company move Premium capacity to whichever employee is handling an intensive project. It also keeps that work within the Business environment, where OpenAI says business data is not used for model training by default and administrators retain centralized billing, authentication, analytics, and spend controls.

5. Availability, Workspace Limits, and the Closed Promotion

ChatGPT Business remains a self-service product supporting credit and debit cards. It does not provide invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfers, wire payments, ACH, net terms, or split payments. Organizations requiring those arrangements must discuss a contracted plan such as ChatGPT Enterprise with OpenAI.

For subscriptions created from August 24, 2026, a Business workspace can contain up to 200 paid Standard and Premium seats in total, including unassigned seats. Older workspaces retain their previous seat limit. OpenAI directs organizations needing more than 200 seats toward Enterprise.

The launch promotion is no longer open to new registrations. OpenAI initially offered $100 in workspace credits for each qualifying Premium seat, up to five seats and $500 per workspace, for the first 10,000 eligible waitlist workspaces.

Owners who joined the waitlist before its August 20 deadline may still qualify if they add eligible Premium seats within 30 days of launch and meet the remaining conditions. Joining the waitlist did not guarantee credits, and the promotional workspace had to be associated with the owner email used for registration.

Premium is also distinct from an individual ChatGPT Pro subscription. It is a seat within a Business workspace, governed by that workspace’s administrators and policies. Likewise, a ChatGPT Business subscription does not include OpenAI API usage; API access is billed separately.
