Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 20
Lot 20: Yi-Gui
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
To whom can I speak of my life's concerns? I tell them to you at the Eighteen Rapids. All affairs of the world flow away like running water, Academic honors, wealth, and rank are like drifting clouds.
Story and textual notes
To whom to tell one's mind: walking alone in cold solitude, with no one to tell. The Eighteen Rapids: located in Ganzhou, with the rapid named 'Panic' (Huangkong); meaning the road ahead holds many hazards and dangers. Flowing away: the past cannot return. Drifting clouds: everything now becomes nothing; how could academic honors, wealth, or status be attained? Knowing that fame and wealth are impermanent, equating them to flowing water and drifting clouds, is to discuss the way of escaping danger with the one who has no one to talk to. This is a lesson encountered often. How could the kindness of the temple/divine be exhausted?
Interpretation
Although your heart is full of concerns, there is never anyone to confide in. You have met with constant setbacks, and the path you must face in the future is also extremely perilous; all of this can only be swallowed in silence. The affairs of human life are unpredictable; for the misfortunes encountered, one can only let them flow away like water, without too much calculation or lingering attachment. If you are waiting for wealth and fame, your expectations will likely be in vain. Although this lot indicates misfortune, if you can take precautions by knowing in advance or face it with a calm mind, you will be better able to let it go.
Traditional summary
Lawsuits will end in disaster; stopping is advisable; fame and wealth are trivial; choose your physician carefully for illness; travelers are far away; marriage is delayed; in all affairs, just follow the circumstances.
