Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 22
The 22nd Lot: Bing Yi
Traditional fortune label: Very Auspicious
Lot poem
White lotuses bloom in the jasper pool, Their solemn appearance is naturally elegant. Born with a skeleton surpassing the mundane, Surely the foremost immortal in the human realm.
Story and textual notes
Lotuses blooming in the pool: The most lofty and exquisite variety. However, blooming in the morning and fading in the evening, the scene is impermanent, and it is feared that it cannot last long and solid. A skeleton surpassing the mundane: Refers to the extraordinary nature of one's birth. Foremost immortal: Refers to ranking among the immortals. If praying for official ranking or fame, one will surely be selected for pure and important positions, comparable to figures like Zhang Liang (Marquis of Liu) or Li Mi (Marquis of Ye). For common and mediocre people drawing this, it often brings empty blossoms and little reality. If asking about the path of transcendence and achieving true fruition, it can be expected very soon. Most Auspicious.
Interpretation
The white lotus in the pool symbolizes nobility that rises from the mud without being stained, and its noble and solemn appearance is naturally formed, but it also carries the implication of isolation and aloofness. Although there is a feeling of prosperity during the day, by evening, all flowers rest, suggesting that it cannot last. Born different, one is viewed by others as quite unconventional. For high officials and nobles, this lot indicates promotion. For ordinary people, it indicates empty talk—attractive on the outside but empty on the inside, which requires caution. For practitioners of Taoism, the day of achieving enlightenment is not far off.
