The 46th Lot: Wu Ji
Traditional fortune label: Moderate
Lot poem
You are a nobleman of ten thousand households in the mountains, Well you know that riding a horse is faster than riding an ox. Today, viewing the mountain scenery from horseback, How can it compare to the freedom of riding an ox?
Story and textual notes
A marquis of ten thousand households represents a noble rank of wealth and honor. The conditions in the mountains can be just as pleasant and satisfying. Although riding an ox is slow, it is safe and stable. Although riding a horse is fast, it involves risks and obstacles. Viewing mountains from horseback refers to abandoning stability to seek danger, and failing to remain content in normal situations. When one rides at a gallop in panic, exhausted and fatigued, unable to pull back the reins, one wishes to go back to riding an ox, walking slowly and peacefully—how carefree that would be! But by then, it is already too late for regrets. How much better it would have been to be cautious at the beginning and avoid acting rashly. 'Horse' and 'Ox' may also indicate specific years or months.
Interpretation
Even though you know riding an ox is safe, you still crave the thrill of riding a horse. When you choose to ride a horse, it is equivalent to abandoning stability for speed, but you must also experience the dangers that speed brings. However, the panic while on horseback makes you want to ride an ox again, but by then it is too late. You can only worry about your safety and cannot enjoy the mountain scenery. This lot tells us to proceed with caution in everything, not to act impulsively on a whim, and to consider all aspects comprehensively.
