Mei Hua Yi Shu

Mei Hua Yi Shu Divination

Supports number casting and time casting. The chart shows the primary, mutual, and relating hexagrams. Interpretation text is not included for now.

Determine the hexagram by number remainders — simple and quick

Enter three integers (1–9999) to cast the hexagram. Leave them blank for a random cast. The upper number mod 8 determines the upper trigram, the lower number mod 8 determines the lower trigram, and the moving-line number mod 6 determines the changing line.

Mei Hua Yi Shu

Plum Blossom Divination How To Use

How does number casting work?

Enter an upper-trigram number, a lower-trigram number and a moving-line number. The first two use remainders after division by 8; the third uses division by 6. A zero remainder becomes 8 or 6. The trigram order is Qian 1, Dui 2, Li 3, Zhen 4, Xun 5, Kan 6, Gen 7, Kun 8. Count lines from the bottom.

A worked example: 1, 2, 3

Upper number 1 gives Qian and lower number 2 gives Dui: hexagram 10, Treading. Moving number 3 changes the third line. The mutual hexagram is 37, The Family, and the resulting hexagram is 1, The Creative. Enter these numbers above to reproduce the calculation.

Which time-casting method is used?

This calculator derives a Xuanji number from the Four Pillars at the selected time. Sums of its digits map to the two trigrams, while the hour branch determines the moving line. This differs from methods that add lunar year, month, day and hour numbers directly. Check the method before comparing results between calculators.

Primary, mutual and changing hexagrams

The primary hexagram combines the two trigrams. Its second to fourth lines form the lower mutual trigram; its third to fifth lines form the upper. Reversing the selected line produces the changing hexagram. Traditional readings use these structures as references for the situation and its development; a name alone does not establish an outcome.

FAQ

What is Plum Blossom Numerology?

Plum Blossom Numerology (Mei Hua Yi Shu) is a divination method based on the Eight Trigrams and the I Ching. It generates hexagrams using information like time, numbers, sounds, and directions, emphasizing image interpretation and subject-object relationships.

What is the difference between Plum Blossom Numerology and I Ching divination?

I Ching divination typically focuses on hexagram and line texts, as well as formal stalk-casting methods. Plum Blossom Numerology is more flexible, often using time or external cues to form hexagrams, and emphasizes the relationships between primary, mutual, and transformed hexagrams.

What is a mutual hexagram?

A mutual hexagram is formed by recombining the inner four lines of the primary hexagram. Traditional interpretations view it as a reference for the intermediate stage or hidden structure of a situation.

Does this tool include hexagram interpretation?

The current focus is on chart generation, providing structures like primary, mutual, and transformed hexagrams. Specific interpretation still requires studying questions, images, and classic texts.

Can I generate many hexagrams in succession?

You can do this for practice, but traditional divination recommends one hexagram per query. Repeatedly casting for the same question is likely to cause confusion in interpretation.

Why can time casting differ between websites?

Calculators can use different calendar boundaries, time inputs and casting traditions. This page uses the Four Pillars Xuanji method. Compare the stated methods before treating different outputs as a calculation error.
