Her beauty is enough to overthrow cities and states, charming all living things, Rendering all the powdered ladies of the imperial harem nameless. At the foot of Mount Mawei, her soul departs, Leaving Emperor Minghuang with everlasting regret to this day.
Story and textual notes
Because Emperor Minghuang of Tang indulged in luxury and pleasure all day long with Imperial Consort Yang, neglecting state affairs, he triggered the An Lushan Rebellion. The capital was in danger, and the six armies escorted the Emperor to retreat toward Sichuan. When they reached Mawei Slope, the soldiers suddenly refused to march further unless the Emperor executed Imperial Consort Yang first. Under these helpless circumstances, the beauty of a generation hanged herself while the Emperor covered his face, unable to bear the sight.
Interpretation
This oracle lot is Most Unfavorable. Those who obtain it can take it as a warning to still avoid misfortune. For after Consort Yang's death, she met Emperor Minghuang in heaven. The first two lines of the lot describe Consort Yang's stunning beauty and her period of carefree glory. The last two lines describe the everlasting longing between her and Emperor Minghuang after her death.
