The 43rd Oracle Lot: Han Wengong is Demoted
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
Only because a direct remonstrance angered the Emperor's face, Day and night, hard to leave the horse's saddle. Master and servant rush about, exhausted in spirit, And further, heavy snow blocks the Lan Pass.
Story and textual notes
Han Yu, a highly learned man of the Tang Dynasty, was an upright and outspoken official. Because he submitted a memorial advising against welcoming the Buddha's bone relic, he was demoted and exiled to Chaoyang, Guangdong.
Interpretation
This oracle lot describes the bleak conditions during his journey into exile: because he spoke out directly, he angered the Emperor, submitting the memorial in the morning and having to depart for distant Chaozhou that very night. To arrive in time to take up office as the new prefect of Chaozhou, they had to travel day and night without leaving the saddle. Just as Han Yu was running for his life and extremely exhausted, they encountered heavy snow blocking the Lan Pass, leaving both man and horse obstructed on the road, unable to take another step forward. This is a most unfavorable oracle lot; having offended the Emperor, the future is uncertain.
Traditional summary
Wealth is not attained, fame is not achieved, illness is hard to cure, plans are unfavorable, livestock and sericulture yield no results, travel is obstructed, marriage should not be asked about, pregnancy is unstable, the residence's fortune is stagnant, and in all matters, one should be careful.
