Wealth and honors are like a deep spring dream, Why should people struggle so hard to pursue them? Even if they hold the tablet and stand in court, At death, only a mound of earth remains.
Story and textual notes
Zhang Liang's ancestors served as chancellors of the Han state for five generations. After Qin destroyed Han, Zhang Liang allied with assassins to strike the King of Qin at Bolangsha, but failed. He fled to Jiangsu, met Huang Shigong, and was taught Taigong's Art of War. Later, he assisted Liu Bang in establishing the Han Dynasty and was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Liu.
Interpretation
This oracle lot refers to Zhang Liang, after being appointed chancellor and enfeoffed as a marquis, realizing that life is like a dream, and wealth, fame, and fortune are like passing clouds. Wealth and honor are like a spring dream; why should people struggle so hard to pursue them? Even if you manage to compete for them, holding the court tablet and standing in the emperor's palace, when you die one day, won't you just leave behind a mound of yellow earth? For those who obtain this oracle lot, you should only abide by your duty and keep to yourself; do not develop greed and make reckless demands. It is more practical to keep a mind of accumulating good deeds, so that your name remains immortal and lasts for ten thousand years. Never treat others with a deceitful heart. There is nothing to rejoice about in this oracle lot, nor is there any harm; it is simply ordinary.
