Original Text (The Judgment)

Khwei indicates that, (notwithstanding the condition of things which it denotes), in small matters there will (still) be good success.

Translation

K'uei (Opposition) Hexagram. Divining this hexagram indicates good fortune in small matters. The 'Image' says: The upper trigram is Li, which represents fire; the lower trigram is Dui, which represents marsh. Fire above and marsh below, diverging from each other—this is the image of Opposition. The superior man, observing this image, synthesizes the commonalities of all things and analyzes their differences.

Shao Yong's Commentary

People's hearts are directed outward, running counter to the Dao; it is difficult to achieve success, and it is not advisable to take major actions. Ominous: Those who obtain this hexagram have poor fortune; like water and fire being incompatible, they contradict each other, and all matters are difficult to succeed.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: High and low do not communicate; handle it with uprightness.
  • Wealth 财运: Take what others discard; there is still a small profit.
  • Household 家宅: It is advisable to relocate and avoid; select and marry.
  • Health 身体: Heat above and dampness below; it is truly difficult to treat.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: At present, fortune is reversed; it is only suitable to handle it with uprightness.
  • Warfare 战征: Military morale is discordant, high and low have different inclinations; guard against separation and dispersal.
  • Fame & Career 功名: High and low do not communicate; fame and official rank are hard to hope for.
  • Business 营商: Prices of goods fluctuate widely; if one can take what others discard, there is still hope for a small profit.
  • Illness 疾病: The illness lies in the upper and lower jiao (triple burner), the qi in the chest is blocked, with heat above and dampness below; treatment is thorny.
  • Household 家宅: Both the celestial and terrestrial plates of this residence are moving, unfavorable to the entire household; urgent relocation is advisable.
  • Marriage 婚姻: There are two daughters who are both willing to be betrothed; the elder is impatient and hasty, the younger is gentle and accommodating. Choose and marry.
  • Litigation 讼事: It can be dismissed immediately.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is formed by doubling different trigrams (Dui below, Li above). Li is Fire; Dui is Marsh. Fire above and marsh below, opposing and not aiding each other. Overcoming generates life, cycles without emptiness. All things have differences, there must be deviations, contradicting each other. K'uei (Opposition) means contradiction.

  • Overall Image 大象: The fire of Li goes upward, while the marsh of Dui goes downward, one up and one down, diverging from each other; also, two daughters living together, an image of not obtaining what is correct.
  • Fortune 运势: Fortune is poor, all matters are difficult to succeed, having the image of water and fire being incompatible; one should remain calm in the face of change.
  • Career 事业: Starting a business is difficult, and the situation is arduous. If partners share the same goal and trust each other, the objective can be achieved. However, initial successes are mostly in small matters. Accumulating small matters can achieve great things. Success comes from joint efforts, failure from divergent intentions. Unity should be strengthened, yielding to seek mutual understanding. Internal mutual suspicion is most avoided.
  • Business 经商: One should enter market competition with a calm and peaceful attitude, seeking common ground while reserving differences. One should not be hostile to competitors, being harmonious but not conforming, sociable but not partisan. In particular, do not cause disputes, and strive to avoid disasters.
  • Seeking Fame 求名: Strive for progress with a sincere heart. When necessary, do not completely cut off ties with bad people; adopt a broad and tolerant attitude, and maintain moderate contact. It is not necessary to be completely identical with like-minded companions; seek commonality within differences.
  • Love & Marriage 婚恋: Both parties must treat each other with sincerity. Otherwise, a third party can easily intervene; if the husband and wife suspect each other, the family will be ruined.
  • Decision 决策: In a state of contradiction and opposition. One must pay attention to treating life with a broad-minded, peaceful, and gentle attitude. Only in this way can one achieve peace of mind and progress through gentleness. Realize the truth that union must have parting, and parting must have union; there is difference in commonality, and commonality in difference. Otherwise, extreme rigidity leads to irritability, and extreme intelligence breeds suspicion. Both irritability and suspicion can be fatal.

Line Text (Original)

The first line, undivided, shows that (to its subject) occasion for repentance will disappear. He has lost his horses, but let him not seek for them;--they will return of themselves. Should he meet with bad men, he will not err (in communicating with them). the first line), and they blend their sincere desires together. The position is one of peril, but there will be no mistake.

Line Text (Translation)

Nine at the beginning: No regret. If you lose your horse, do not seek it; it will return on its own. If you meet evil people on the way, there will be no disaster. The 'Image' says: Meeting evil people without disaster is intended to dispel the evil intentions of bad men.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Average. Those who obtain this line will lose first and then gain in their plans, and relationships will separate first and then unite; guard carefully against ominous disasters. Officials in idle posts will be reinstated, and those demoted will be promoted again.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Good luck is just arriving; let nature take its course.
  • Wealth 财运: No need to worry too much; there will be great prosperity later.
  • Household 家宅: Smooth and without blame; wait patiently.
  • Health 身体: No major issue.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Good luck has just arrived, disaster and regret have receded. Although there are losses, do not worry; even if evil people come to intrude, do not reject them, and naturally there will be no blame.
  • Warfare 战征: In the initial battle, although there is a small defeat, there will be a great victory later, and even a strong enemy cannot harm us. No blame.
  • Business 营商: In newly started trade, what is lost will surely be recovered, so there is no need to worry. Do not refuse those who come, and do not bicker. At present, full profit is not seen, but there will be great prosperity later.
  • Fame & Career 功名: Although there is no disaster or regret at present, fame has not yet been achieved. One must wait until next year, when meeting in the alley at the second line occurs, then prominence will be achieved.
  • Household 家宅: The household is peaceful and smooth, no regret, no blame.
  • Lost Items 失物: No need to search, it will be found by itself.
  • Marriage 婚姻: Not accomplished at present; wait until the sixth month, or six years, and it will surely succeed, auspicious. It corresponds to the line statement of the Top Nine: 'Not a bandit, but a marital suitor.'
  • Litigation 讼事: The litigation will surely be vindicated, no blame.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

Wei Ȝî intimates progress and success (in the circumstances which it implies). (We see) a young fox that has nearly crossed (the stream), when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

Wei Chi (Before Completion). Success. The little fox has almost crossed the river, but gets its tail wet. There is no advantage in any direction. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Li, representing fire; the lower trigram is Kan, representing water. Fire is above water; water cannot overcome fire. This is the image of Before Completion. The superior man, observing this image, senses that water and fire are misplaced and cannot overcome each other, and thus with caution distinguishes the nature of things and examines their proper positions.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Cannot assist, wait for the right time to act; grow from small to large, do not advance impetuously. Minor misfortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, their fortune is obstructed, and things do not go as wished. It is advisable to progress from small to large, advance steadily, and patiently break through difficulties, then success will eventually be achieved.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Kan below, Li above). Li represents fire, and Kan represents water. Fire is above and water is below. The fire overpowers the water, and the task of putting out the fire is not yet completed, hence it is called Wei Chi (Before Completion). The Book of Changes (I Ching) begins with the two hexagrams Qian and Kun, and ends with Chi Chi (After Completion) and Wei Chi (Before Completion), fully reflecting the philosophy of change and development.

Line Text (Translation)

Nine at the second: Meeting a hospitable host, no blame. The 'Image' says: Meeting a hospitable host shows that one has not lost the way.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Average. Those who obtain this line will meet a soulmate, and their plans will go as desired. Officials will meet a wise ruler, and promotion is hopeful.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: A gathering of wind and clouds (a great opportunity); march forward courageously.
  • Wealth 财运: Meeting a wealthy partner to run a business together.
  • Household 家宅: A noble person visits; watch out for private affairs.
  • Health 身体: Meeting a good doctor.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: The hexagram meets deviation (Opposition), and fortune was originally poor. Only recently has one obtained an excellent opportunity; going forward will surely bring celebration.
  • Warfare 战征: The second and fifth lines oppose each other. The second is our troops, and the fifth is the enemy's. Meeting in a winding alley, engaging in hand-to-hand combat; this battle has not yet decided a victor.
  • Business 营商: The character 'xiang' (alley) contains 'gong' (joint), indicating it must be a partnership business. There is the image of meeting a wealthy person to manage it together.
  • Fame & Career 功名: Exactly the time of meeting a great opportunity.
  • Household 家宅: This residence is inside a winding alley; recently a noble person will come to meet, conversing joyfully, a great celebration.
  • Illness 疾病: Meeting a good doctor, no blame.
  • Marriage 婚姻: As the Book of Songs chants, 'Meeting by chance, just as I wished,' this is private affection between a man and a woman, not a formal marriage.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

Shih Ho indicates successful progress (in the condition of things which it supposes). It will be advantageous to use legal constraints.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

Shi He (Biting Through). Success. Favorable for legal proceedings. The Image says: The lower trigram is Zhen, representing thunder; the upper trigram is Li, representing lightning. Thunder and lightning uniting is the image of Biting Through. The ancient kings, observing this image, took guidance from the awe-inspiring thunder and the illuminating lightning, resolved to govern with strict clarity, thereby clarifying punishments and refining the laws.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Biting through hard bones, a firm attitude; many difficulties and obstacles, yet actively striving. Misfortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, matters do not go as desired, disputes are inevitable, and all things are obstructed. It is advisable to adhere to routine, not be enticed by gain, so that peace and safety can be preserved.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is formed by the stacking of different trigrams (Zhen below, Li above). Li is a yin trigram; Zhen is a yang trigram. Yin and Yang intersect, biting through hard objects, symbolizing the simultaneous application of benevolence and authority, combining leniency with severity, and tempering hardness with softness. Shi He represents the biting together of the upper and lower jaws, chewing.

In the third line, divided, we see one whose carriage is dragged back, while the oxen in it are pushed back, and he is himself subjected to the shaving of his head and the cutting off of his nose. There is no good beginning, but there will be a good end.

Line Text (Translation)

Six at the third: Seeing a cargo cart, the ox pulling it struggles up and down with great effort, and the driver is a slave with a branded forehead and a severed nose. At first, the cart was stuck and immobile, but later it was finally pulled. The 'Image' says: Seeing a slave with a branded forehead and a severed nose pulling a cart, the line's position indicates that the yin line of Six at the third resides in a yang position, which is inappropriate, like falling into a miserable situation. Unsatisfactory at first, but with a good ending, because Six at the third, a yin line, advances to meet Nine at the fourth, a yang line, like obtaining help from the strong.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Ominous. Those who obtain this line will face obstacles in their plans, seeking peace in danger, confused first and smooth later. The wicked face the misfortune of bodily injury to relatives. Officials must guard against the slander of petty people.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Fear of bodily injury; endure with difficulty for three years.
  • Wealth 财运: Harmony among people is not easy; no profit to be made.
  • Household 家宅: Advisable to face west; suspicion first, then resolved.
  • Health 身体: Sores on the face; will heal on their own after a long time.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Fortune is inappropriate, fear of disaster from bodily injury; after three years, good luck will be obtained.
  • Business 营商: Discord with others; not only is it impossible to make a profit, but one must also guard against the adversity of imprisonment; it can succeed later.
  • Fame & Career 功名: Restrained from both sides, finding blame at every turn, how can one achieve fame? The late fortune is good.
  • Warfare 战征: Carts broken, horses fled, troops defeated and generals killed, unable to advance; one must wait for the responding army to be effective, so that there is defeat at first and victory at the end.
  • Marriage 婚姻: At first, due to the groom's family's suspicion and jealousy, humiliation was inevitable; eventually, suspicion is cleared and the marriage is completed.
  • Household 家宅: This residence is in an inappropriate location, constrained on all sides. People in the house are prone to injuries on the head and face, because facing south brings the fire of Li to overcome it. Changing the direction to face west, the position of Dui, is auspicious.
  • Illness 疾病: Surely sores on the face; will heal on their own after a long time.
  • Litigation 讼事: Inevitable punishment and adversity, but eventually resolved by itself.
  • Lost Items 失物: Can be found later.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter; guard against scars on the face.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

Tâ Yû indicates that, (under the circumstances which it implies), there will be great progress and success.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

The Hexagram of Ta Yu (Possession in Great Measure). Great prosperity and smooth success. The Image says: The lower trigram of this hexagram is Qian, representing Heaven, and the upper trigram is Li, representing Fire. Fire is high in heaven, illuminating all directions; this is the image of Possession in Great Measure. In accordance with this image, the superior man, taking pattern from fire, discerns good and evil, suppresses evil and promotes good, thereby conforming to the heavenly decree and praying for good fortune.

Shao Yong's Commentary

The sun shines bright in the mid-heaven, illuminating all things; grand and wealthy, maintaining fullness and preserving peace. Auspicious: Those who obtain this hexagram are in the midst of good fortune. Everything is auspicious, and great harvests are reaped, but one must guard against the extreme turning back, where peak prosperity turns to decline.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Qian below and Li above). The upper trigram is Li, representing Fire; the lower trigram is Qian, representing Heaven. Fire is in heaven, illuminating all things. The multitude submits, conforming to heaven and acting in accordance with the season, leading to great achievements.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Average. Those who obtain this line can get help from friends and turn danger into safety; marriage seekers will surely find a match. Officials will receive recommendations from colleagues, and there is a chance for promotion.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Eccentric personality; helped by friends.
  • Wealth 财运: In a dilemma; helped by an old friend.
  • Household 家宅: Surroundings are desolate.
  • Health 身体: Eye disease; seek medical attention.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Aloof and solitary temperament, out of step with the times; fortunately meeting a like-minded companion, barely sufficient to avoid blame.
  • Warfare 战征: Isolated army penetrating deep, almost leading to peril; fortunately rescued, can be without blame.
  • Business 营商: A lonely traveler journeying far, the goods do not suit the market, leaving them in a dilemma; only when meeting an old friend from the hometown can the goods be sold, safe and without blame.
  • Fame & Career 功名: Destiny is lonely and cold, difficult to hope for prominence, merely without blame.
  • Illness 疾病: The illness is an eye disease; meeting a good doctor, one can be without blame.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

In (what is denoted by) Sun, if there be sincerity (in him who employs it), there will be great good fortune:--freedom from error; firmness and correctness that can be maintained; and advantage in every movement that shall be made. In what shall this (sincerity in the exercise of Sun) be employed? (Even) in sacrifice two baskets of grain, (though there be nothing else), may be presented.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

The Hexagram Sun (Decrease). If divination encounters this hexagram, there will be gains, supreme good fortune, no disaster, and it is a favorable inquiry. Moreover, proceeding will bring benefit. Someone will present two bowls of food, which may be enjoyed. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Gen, Gen represents mountain; the lower trigram is Dui, Dui represents lake. Thus, having a lake below the mountain is the image of the Decrease hexagram. The superior person, observing this image, takes warning from the lake water eroding the foot of the mountain, thereby restraining their anger and blocking their desires.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Decreasing the lower to increase the upper, decreasing the full to increase the empty; difficult at first and easy later, measuring expenditure by income. Minor good fortune: Those who obtain this hexagram decrease themselves to benefit others. Although there will be some setbacks at the beginning, giving will always bring returns, representing a sign of blessing in disguise.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is a combination of two different trigrams (Dui below, Gen above). Gen is mountain; Dui is lake. With the mountain above and the lake below, the great lake erodes the base of the mountain. Decrease and increase alternate; there is gain in loss, and loss in gain. One must handle the relation between the two cautiously. Decreasing the lower to increase the upper: in governing a state, excess will damage the foundation of the country. Decrease where decrease is due, but it must be within one's capacity and moderate. Minimizing decrease and maximizing increase is the best.

Line Text (Translation)

Six at the fifth: No regret. Seeing the clansmen eating meat, the lonely traveler happily joins them; safe all the way. The 'Image' says: The clansmen eating meat; going forward will surely bring celebration.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Average. Those who obtain this line will profit in business and receive promotion from others. The wicked face resentment from relatives and friends, bodily injury to family, and involvement in lawsuits. Officials will achieve success and fame, and scholars will achieve excellent results.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

(Lî suggests the idea of) one treading on the tail of a tiger, which does not bite him. There will be progress and success.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

Lü Hexagram. Treading on the tail of a tiger, the tiger does not bite the person, auspicious. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Qian, representing Heaven; the lower trigram is Dui, representing Lake. Heaven above and Lake below; the noble and the humble are clearly distinguished. This is the image of the Lü hexagram. The superior person observes this image, thereby distinguishing upper and lower, noble and humble, causing the people to follow rules and behave properly.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Uneasy steps, difficulties and dangers; remain humble and self-respecting, serve the master with respect and caution. Minor misfortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, it is a difficult period with many setbacks and obstacles. It is not suitable to advance hastily in anything; one must proceed step-by-step and act with caution.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Dui below and Qian above). Qian represents Heaven and Dui represents Lake. Heaven is used as a metaphor for the ruler, and Lake for the people. The original text: 'Treading on the tail of the tiger, it does not bite the person.' Therefore, the outcome is auspicious. The ruler is above and the people are below, each in their proper place. The yielding Dui meets the firm Qian, making the treading perilous. Lü means practice or conduct, and the meaning of the hexagram is to forge ahead down-to-earth.

He first bends his bow against him, and afterwards unbends it, (for he discovers) that he is not an assailant to injure, but a near relative. Going forward, he shall meet with (genial) rain, and there will be good fortune.

Line Text (Translation)

Top Nine: A traveler walks alone, seeing a large pig lying on the road, and meeting a large cart filled with strangely dressed people. The traveler draws his bow to shoot, but later puts down the bow and arrow. Because this group is not bandits, but going to a betrothal. The traveler proceeds as usual, meeting heavy rain, but all is safe. The 'Image' says: The traveler meeting suitors on the way as stated in the Top Nine's line text; they suspected each other at first, almost resorting to force, but later got along peacefully and traveled as usual. This is because the suspicion and fear of both sides have vanished.

Shao Yong's Commentary

Average. Those who obtain this line will suffer defilement and slander, loss first and then benefit. Officials must guard against the worry of being slandered.

Fu Peirong's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Time of changing fortune; keep a correct heart and sincere intention.
  • Wealth 财运: Only after the autumn rain can profits be obtained.
  • Household 家宅: Guard against haunting/mischief; the marriage will be harmonious in the end.
  • Health 身体: Illness caused by suspicion; resolving the doubt will remove the problem.

Takashima Donsho's Commentary

  • Fortune 时运: Just at the time of changing fortunes, it is most appropriate to quiet the mind and settle thoughts, not entertaining illusions. Once illusions arise, a hundred forms of phantasms appear; guard against developing illnesses born of suspicion.
  • Warfare 战征: The camp position is too high, and the military force is too isolated; guard against an attack by mock/suspicious troops.
  • Business 营商: At present, commodity prices fluctuate wildly with endless changes; it is midsummer and customers are scarce. One must wait for the autumn rains to fall before profits can be made.
  • Fame & Career 功名: Currently, ghosts and monsters fluctuate unpredictably. One must wait ten years, leaving Jian (Obstruction) and entering Xie (Deliverance), before success in exams can be expected.
  • Marriage 婚姻: Discord at first due to suspicion and jealousy, later resolved perfectly; auspicious.
  • Household 家宅: This residence undergoes changes; guard against ghosts and spirits. Meeting marriage celebrations can resolve it.
  • Illness 疾病: Mistaking a reflection of a bow in a cup for a snake—illness caused by suspicion. Once the doubt is broken, the illness will suddenly disappear.
  • Pregnancy 六甲: Give birth to a daughter.

Changing Hexagram (Original)

Kwei Mei indicates that (under the conditions which it denotes) action will be evil, and in no wise advantageous.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)

The Marrying Maiden. Divining this hexagram, setting forth on an expedition is dangerous. Nothing is advantageous. Thus, thunder rolls over the marsh, and the thunder moves the water, which metaphorically represents the mutual attraction of man and woman falling in love and forming a union. This is the image of the Marrying Maiden hexagram. In observing this image, the superior man perceives the success and failure of marriage in the long course of married life.

Traditional Interpretation

This hexagram is a combination of two different trigrams (lower Dui and upper Zhen). Zhen is movement and the eldest son; Dui is joy and the youngest daughter. With the youngest daughter following the eldest son, feelings of affection arise, initiating the movement toward marriage and the image of marrying off a daughter, hence it is called the Marrying Maiden (Kuei Mei).
