Original Text (The Judgment)
Kăn gives the intimation of ease and development. When (the time of) movement (which it indicates) comes, (the subject of the hexagram) will be found looking out with apprehension, and yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement (like a crash of thunder) terrifies all within a hundred lî, he will be (like the sincere worshipper) who is not (startled into) letting go his ladle and (cup of) sacrificial spirits.
Translation
The Zhen Hexagram. When the sacrifice is approached, the sound of thunder arrives, making some people tremble with fear; yet shortly afterward, they talk and laugh as usual. A sudden clap of thunder shocks a hundred li, yet some remain calm and composed, holding the sacrificial ladle without spilling a single drop of wine. The *Xiang Zhuan* (Treatise on the Symbols) says: The upper and lower trigrams of this hexagram are both Zhen, and Zhen is thunder. Thus, successive claps of thunder form the image of the Zhen Hexagram. The gentleman, in accordance with this, stands in awe and dread, examining and cultivating his character.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Successive thunderclaps resound; one should exert oneself and strive for progress. First difficult, then easy; first bitter, then sweet. Minor good fortune: Those who obtain this hexagram should rise up and strive, for much can be achieved; however, while the surface appears prosperous, there may be hidden difficulties within. One should be cautious in speech and behavior to avoid losses.
Fu Peirong's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: The fortune is strong; remain cautious to avoid blame.
- Wealth 财运: Accumulated goods can all be sold.
- Household 家宅: Protect the foundation of the house; offering prayers is appropriate; a good match.
- Health 身体: Excessive liver fire; should avoid overexertion.
Takashima Donsho's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: The fortune is rising; guard against excess. It is advisable to be cautious and restrained to avoid losses.
- Warfare 战征: There is an omen of consecutive days of battle; one must remain vigilant and aware of fear in the moment.
- Business 营商: Shocking thunder clears stagnation; stagnation refers to accumulated stock, meaning that accumulated goods can all be cleared and sold at once. The *Xiang Zhuan* says: 'Successive thunderclaps: the image of Shock,' indicating there will be one or two good transactions.
- Fame & Career 功名: Thunder represents the energy of growth and vitality; 'successive thunder' signifies successive victories.
- Household 家宅: Guard against disturbances to the house's foundation. The top line says 'upon one's neighbors,' indicating that neighbors are likely undertaking construction work; offering prayers is appropriate.
- Marriage 婚姻: *Zhen* represents the eldest son, and its complementary hexagram is *Xun*, which represents the eldest daughter—a good match.
- Illness 疾病: This is a symptom of excessive liver-wood; guard against changes, which is concerning.
- Pregnancy 六甲: Gives birth to a boy.
- Lost Items 失物: Will be found upon a movement.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by doubling the same trigram (Zhen below, Zhen above). Zhen is thunder. The doubling of Zhen creates a resounding echo, which clears away stagnant air, leading to smooth progress and prosperity. In daily life, one should prepare for danger in times of peace, harboring a sense of reverence and fear without daring to slacken, so that even in the face of sudden emergencies, one remains calm, talking and laughing as usual.
- Overall Image 大象: Successive thunderclaps resound, carrying the sound a thousand li; it is an omen of alarm but no real danger, and also implies change.
- Fortune 运势: On the surface, prosperous and glorious; internally, it is in a turbulent time of troubles and unrest.
- Career 事业: Situated in an unfavorable, or even dangerous situation. It is essential to remain highly vigilant and be prepared to prevent trouble. Once a sudden incident occurs, it can be handled calmly, and lessons can be learned from it, minimizing losses on the one hand and allowing for swift recovery on the other, bringing the career to new heights.
- Business 经商: In the fierce competition of the market, problems may arise at any time, leading to difficult situations. Cope with the unfolding reality calmly and unhurriedly, adhere to the upright and moderate path without bias or excess, and overcome difficulties with a resolute and composed attitude. After passing through a crisis, great profits will surely be obtained.
- Seeking Fame 求名: It is highly likely to encounter setbacks. Do not be discouraged; instead, self-reflect to find the root cause of the problem.
- Love & Marriage 婚恋: Both romance and family life may experience sudden changes; handle them with a calm attitude, and there will be an ideal result.
- Decision 决策: Situated at a turning point in life. One should correctly summarize the past to lay the foundation for pioneering a new career. On the path forward, always harbor a sense of reverence and caution, work diligently, adhere to correct principles, and press ahead through difficulties; then fortune will be prosperous.

Changing Hexagram (Original)
Yü indicates that, (in the state which it implies), feudal princes may be set up, and the hosts put in motion, with advantage.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Yü (Enthusiasm). Favorable for establishing feudal lords and mobilizing armies. The Image says: The upper trigram is Zhen (Thunder) representing thunder, and the lower trigram is Kun (Earth) representing the earth. Spring thunder rumbles and the earth shakes, stimulating and bringing forth all things; this is the image of the Yü hexagram. Observing this, the ancient kings took inspiration from the thunder that fills the earth to create music, praising virtue, presenting it magnificently to the Supreme Lord (Shangdi) and extending the honor to their ancestors.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Thunder emerges from the earth; pleasing, obedient, and joyful. In times of peace and happiness, one must guard against troubles and adversity. Auspicious: Those who obtain this hexagram accord with heaven and adapt to the times. Everything goes auspiciously, and one can receive assistance from elders. However, one must guard against sexual temptations and must not indulge in the world of sensual pleasures.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Kun below, Zhen above). Kun represents Earth and compliance; Zhen represents Thunder and movement. Thunder emerges according to the season, signifying the return of spring to the earth. Acting in compliance is the source of harmony and joy. This hexagram and the Qian (Modesty) hexagram are reverse hexagrams (zong gua) to each other, interacting with one another.

The second line, divided, shows its subject, when the movement approaches, in a position of peril. He judges it better to let go the articles (in his possession), and to ascend a very lofty height. There is no occasion for him to pursue after (the things he has let go); in seven days he will find them.
Line Text (Translation)
Six in the second line: Thunder and lightning strike, posing great danger; in panic, one loses their coins, climbing over mountains and traveling a long distance to search for them but in vain. The diviner tells him: 'No need to pursue them; within seven or eight days, this loss will be recovered.' The *Xiang Zhuan* says: 'Climbing over nine hills' during thunder and lightning indicates that the line's position shows the person encountering the lightning and being in a dangerous situation.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Inauspicious: Those who obtain this line are in a time of many difficulties, or may face disputes; it is best to be careful. Officials have the worry of being framed by treacherous individuals.
Fu Peirong's Commentary

- Wealth 财运: There are gains and losses; maintain crisis awareness.

Changing Hexagram (Original)
Kwei Mei indicates that (under the conditions which it denotes) action will be evil, and in no wise advantageous.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
The Marrying Maiden. Divining this hexagram, setting forth on an expedition is dangerous. Nothing is advantageous. The Image says: The hexagram of the Marrying Maiden: the lower trigram is Dui, which represents the marsh; the upper trigram is Zhen, which represents thunder. Thus, thunder rolls over the marsh, and the thunder moves the water, which metaphorically represents the mutual attraction of man and woman falling in love and forming a union. This is the image of the Marrying Maiden hexagram. In observing this image, the superior man perceives the success and failure of marriage in the long course of married life.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Violating the natural order, one's path will come to an end; examine the principles of things clearly, and bring an end to wild delusions. Ominous: For those who obtain this hexagram, in times of difficulty, acting contrary to the natural order will bring continuous disasters. It is advisable to clearly examine principles, cultivate the mind and character, and eliminate wild delusions.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is a combination of two different trigrams (lower Dui and upper Zhen). Zhen is movement and the eldest son; Dui is joy and the youngest daughter. With the youngest daughter following the eldest son, feelings of affection arise, initiating the movement toward marriage and the image of marrying off a daughter, hence it is called the Marrying Maiden (Kuei Mei).

The third six, divided, shows its subject distraught amid the startling movements going on. If those movements excite him to (right) action, there will be no mistake.
Line Text (Translation)
Six in the third line: Encountering thunder and lightning upon going out, one feels anxious and uneasy. Continuing forward brings no disaster. The *Xiang Zhuan* says: 'Encountering thunder and lightning upon going out, one feels anxious and uneasy,' because Six in the third line is a yin line occupying a yang position, resembling a person in an unfavorable situation.

- Illness 疾病: Although critical, recovery is possible (life is reborn).
- Pregnancy 六甲: Gives birth to a boy.
Changing Hexagram (Original)
Făng intimates progress and development. When a king has reached the point (which the name denotes) there is no occasion to be anxious (through fear of a change). Let him be as the sun at noon.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
The Hexagram Feng (Abundance). Holding a sacrifice, the king will personally attend the ancestral temple. Do not worry, the best time is at midday. The Image says: The upper trigram of this hexagram is Zhen, Zhen is thunder; the lower trigram is Li, Li is lightning. Lightning and thunder together show a major celestial phenomenon revealed by heaven, which is also the image of the hexagram Feng. In observing this image, the superior man, inspired by the brilliance and majesty of lightning and thunder, decides lawsuits and administers punishments.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Grandeur and fullness, acquiring wealth and gaining profit; plans and hopes will be fulfilled, and there will surely be celebrations. Minor luck: For those who obtain this hexagram, their fortune is strong, undertakings can succeed, and both fame and fortune can be gained. However, one should not be overly greedy, but rather find contentment in what one has, and guard against sorrow arising from extreme joy, loss of wealth, or even fire hazards.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by stacking two different trigrams (Li below, Zhen above). Lightning flashes and thunder rolls, leading to great achievements, symbolizing reaching the summit like the midday sun. Warning: One must pay close attention to things moving in the opposite direction; prosperity and decline are inconstant, and one must remain vigilant.

Line Text (Translation)

- Warfare 战征: In the course of battle, as the saying goes, 'courage is aroused by the first roll of drums.' By the third or fourth line, bravery has waned. If advancing recklessly, guard against horses and chariots sinking into the mire and being trapped by the enemy.
- Business 营商: Doing business is fine, but spending money like dirt means one will probably fail to accumulate savings.

- Household 家宅: This house has piles of earth in front of the door, and the drains in the house are mostly blocked, causing the Yang energy to be obstructed, which is unfavorable.
- Pregnancy 六甲: Gives birth to a boy.
Changing Hexagram (Original)
Fû indicates that there will be free course and progress (in what it denotes). (The subject of it) finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed . He will return and repeat his (proper) course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.
Changing Hexagram (Translation)
The Hexagram Fu (Return). Pervasive success. Going out and staying at home are both free from illness. There is profit to be made, and one can remain free from disaster. On the return journey, one will return in seven days. It is advantageous to have a destination. The Xiang Commentary says: The inner trigram of this hexagram is Zhen, representing thunder, and the outer is Kun, representing earth. When the weather is freezing and cold, thunder returns to the earth; going out and returning, returning in accordance with the season, this is the image of the Return hexagram. The ancient kings observed this image, taking thunder as their model, closed the city gates on the winter solstice, not admitting merchants and travelers, and the ruler did not inspect the states.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Cycles recur, and the spark of life buds anew; success is in sight, but impatience leads to failure. Minor good fortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, their fortunes are turning for the better. By going with the flow, undertakings can succeed, but it is not advisable to advance too hastily.

Sui hexagram. Supreme success, perseverance is fruitful, no misfortune. The Image says: The lower trigram of this hexagram is Zhen, which represents thunder, and the upper trigram is Dui, which represents marsh. Thunder enters into the middle of the marsh, the earth is cold and frozen, and all things lie dormant; this is the image of Following. In view of this image, the gentleman, modeling himself after the thunder that falls silent in accordance with the heavenly seasons, rests and works according to the times, and goes indoors to rest towards evening.

Minor good fortune: Those who obtain this hexagram should follow the general trend, and their affairs can succeed. Communicating and exchanging more with others in all matters can bring both fame and fortune. One must not obstinately cling to one's own views; those who are arbitrary and dictatorial will not succeed.

Following refers to mutual compliance: oneself following external things, and external things following oneself, with communication between them. Following must adapt to the time and comply with the situation, having principles and conditions, and taking steadfastness as a prerequisite.

Line Text (Original)
The topmost line, divided, shows its subject, amidst the startling movements (of the time), in breathless dismay and looking round him with trembling apprehension. If he take action, there will be evil. If, while the startling movements have not reached his own person and his neighbourhood, (he were to take precautions), there would be no error, though his relatives might (still) speak against him.
Line Text (Translation)
Six at the top: Thunder and lightning strike successively; the person acts cautiously, looking around alertly because the path is difficult and danger lurks everywhere. Yet the lightning will not strike them, but will fall on the neighbor instead. This is because they themselves have no fault, whereas the neighbors are guilty. The *Xiang Zhuan* says: 'Thunder and lightning strike successively, one acts cautiously' because the mind is empty and the spirit is tense. Although it is perilous, there is ultimately no disaster, because taking warning from the neighbor's plight allows one to distance oneself from evil and draw near to good.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Inauspicious: Those who obtain this line must guard against accidents, or marital clash, or neighbors encountering disasters. Officials should guard against the danger of demotion.
Fu Peirong's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: High position is bound to be dangerous; it is best to remain quiet and guard oneself.
- Wealth 财运: Must guard against excessive greed; cautiously maintain small achievements.
- Household 家宅: The neighbors have troubles; a matchmaker will come soon.
- Health 身体: Calm the mind and rest the eyes.
Takashima Donsho's Commentary
- Fortune 时运: At a time when the shock is about to settle, rash advancement brings misfortune, while quiet guarding brings good fortune.
- Fame & Career 功名: A high position is bound to be dangerous; it is proper to retreat and defend, which ensures no blame.
- Business 营商: The changes have settled; do not be overly greedy. Seeing others suffer losses, one should be even more cautious and defensive to remain blameless.

Changing Hexagram (Translation)
Shi He (Biting Through). Success. Favorable for legal proceedings. The Image says: The lower trigram is Zhen, representing thunder; the upper trigram is Li, representing lightning. Thunder and lightning uniting is the image of Biting Through. The ancient kings, observing this image, took guidance from the awe-inspiring thunder and the illuminating lightning, resolved to govern with strict clarity, thereby clarifying punishments and refining the laws.
Shao Yong's Commentary
Biting through hard bones, a firm attitude; many difficulties and obstacles, yet actively striving. Misfortune: For those who obtain this hexagram, matters do not go as desired, disputes are inevitable, and all things are obstructed. It is advisable to adhere to routine, not be enticed by gain, so that peace and safety can be preserved.
Traditional Interpretation
This hexagram is formed by the stacking of different trigrams (Zhen below, Li above). Li is a yin trigram; Zhen is a yang trigram. Yin and Yang intersect, biting through hard objects, symbolizing the simultaneous application of benevolence and authority, combining leniency with severity, and tempering hardness with softness. Shi He represents the biting together of the upper and lower jaws, chewing.
