Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 38
The 38th Lot: Ding Xin
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
Crickets chirp sadly as you guard the lonely chamber, With anxious heart, you look a thousand miles away, waiting for letters. Though you wait until the wealthy young master arrives, Autumn and winter bring biting winds and drizzling rain.
Story and textual notes
The autumn scenery of a lonely chamber and the chirping of insects present a most desolate and bitter situation. Looking anxiously across a thousand miles, hoping repeatedly, and finally waiting for the arrival of the wealthy young master seems like good news. Yet, who could have anticipated unexpected troubles, bringing another round of distress? The cold winds and drizzling rain represent an unbearable state of affairs. In all things, it is best to be cautious and maintain your current position.
Interpretation
Guarding a lonely chamber all by yourself, with only the chirping of insects—what a desolate scene! Sustaining yourself only on hope, waiting for good news from someone far away. Though you finally wait for the beloved to return in glory, it is but a fleeting dream. The autumn wind and sorrowful rain make the situation unbearably bitter and grief-stricken. This lot is so sorrowful that misfortune follows you like a shadow and cannot be shaken off. At this moment, it is not advisable to make any decisions. It is better to stick to your post, meet changes with constancy, and quietly wait for the situation to shift. Treat even the bitterest fortune as a trial sent by heaven.
Traditional summary
Do not ask for wealth; do not engage in lawsuits; the traveler far away has not returned; illness is severe; marriage will not succeed; many strange dreams; pray to the gods and do not act rashly.
