Lot poem
You burn incense and come to pray, but what is there to say? Good and evil are clearly divided, as you yourself well know. Cast aside those selfish thoughts that obscure your conscience, And when you step out, there will be no obstacles in this time of smooth passage.
Story and textual notes
A person should do good and eliminate evil. Even if others do not know, one knows it in one's own heart. If one tries to deceive others, acting against conscience for private gain or harming others to benefit oneself, it will surely bring about misfortune. The querent is advised to be fair, upright, and not to do to others what they do not want done to themselves. In this way, human affairs will naturally flow smoothly without any obstruction. It is highly advisable to reflect on oneself immediately.
Interpretation
Why must you pray to the gods to know good and evil? Right and wrong, progress and retreat, lie naturally within your own heart. You have your own yardstick; what is right and what is wrong is clear to your conscience. If you do not want others to know, do not do it in the first place. You must keep good thoughts and never harbor intentions to harm others. Harming others for personal gain will bring misfortune. Once selfish desires are cast aside, and all actions are just, you will be able to proceed smoothly without hindrance wherever you go.
