Lot 68: Geng Xin
Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune
Lot poem
Trading pearls in the south and salt in the north, Your wealth and goods have multiplied several times in recent years. I advise you to stop here and buy fields and a cottage, If your heart desires too much, when will you ever be satisfied?
Story and textual notes
‘Trading pearls and salt’ means that in the past, one has engaged in many kinds of business. Since wealth and goods have multiplied, one can rest a bit. ‘Seeking fields and a cottage’ is the act of one who retreats and guards their position. ‘I advise you to stop here’ means that one should make plans for this retreat and defense, so as to avoid blame. ‘Heart desires too much’ means the mind is constantly greedy. ‘Satisfied’ means being content. For those who are greedy, the more they have, the less satisfied they feel; how can there be an end? It will not stop until disaster and ruin strike. Therefore, this is a deep warning. The wise strive for tranquility, which is the path of prosperity and integrity.
Interpretation
You have a very good business mind and have made a lot of profit over the past few years, but you have also developed a significant ambition. I advise you to stop while you are ahead! It is better to give up seeking profits and retreat to a quiet country life, where you can live a peaceful and smooth life. Human desires can never be satisfied; the greedier the heart, the more deficient it feels, with no day of rest. If you continue like this, greed will bring misfortune, and the misfortune will not stop until your family estate is completely ruined. You must think deeply; now is the best time to withdraw gracefully. Returning to a tranquil life is what true life is about.
Traditional summary
