The moment an evil thought arises in your heart, Heaven already knows, Why need you ask me to resolve your doubts? I wish you would change your plans and follow filial piety and brotherly respect, Then you need not worry about the household not being harmonious.
Story and textual notes
‘Just arising in your mind’ refers to the moment a single thought first stirs. Heaven already knows: humans can be deceived, but Heaven cannot be deceived. ‘Why need you ask’ means that good and evil are prominent and their consequences are clear; one's own heart should naturally know, without waiting for the deity's words to tell. ‘Change plans’ means to discard the ungood and move toward the good. ‘Follow filial piety and brotherly respect’ means taking respect for father and deference to elder brother as the foundation. With filial piety and goodness, Heaven will naturally bestow blessings, and a harmonious household can be attained without worry. Those who change their plans will find fortune, while those who cling to their faults will meet disaster.
Interpretation
The moment a thought arises in your mind, Heaven already knows it all. Since it is an ill intent, why bother asking the deities to resolve the doubts in your heart? In fact, your own heart knows very well what is right and what is wrong. As long as you turn to goodness, purge the bad thoughts from your mind, and start with filial piety and brotherly love—filial devotion to parents and affection for siblings being the most basic path—then as long as you achieve this, you need not worry about the family failing to be harmonious. Naturally, your family and business will be peaceful and happy, as the saying goes, 'harmony in the family brings prosperity to all.' If you do not eradicate the bad thoughts in your mind, misfortune will arrive at any moment.
