Thunder, rain, wind, and clouds each have their presiding deity, Pray with utmost sincerity and do not harbor doubts. The agreed day when heavy rain will fall for you, Will be exactly during the scorching heat of the Mid-Fu period.
Story and textual notes
Thunder, rain, wind, and clouds are the changing states of Heaven. 'Each have their presiding deity' means each has its governing authority and cannot be manipulated at will. The ups and downs, gains and losses of human life are also like this. 'Pray with utmost sincerity' is how the deities examine the sincere devotion of the diviner. 'Lin' is timely heavy rain; the Zuo Zhuan says rain that lasts for three days or more is 'lin', which can also be interpreted as the number three. 'Make an agreement' is to indicate a fixed date. 'Scorching heat' is a time of great drought. 'Mid-Fu' is the Geng day of the second decade after the Great Heat. It means the rain will fall at this time. Although praying for rain is used as a metaphor, all hopes should be viewed in this light; in short, it is best to wait for the right time.
Interpretation
The weather changes in nature each have their own reasons and cannot be controlled by humans. Is it not the same with the fortunes and obstacles of human life? You must pray sincerely to let the heavenly deities feel your sincerity. 'Lin day' refers to the day of rain. Pointing out when it will rain during the Great Heat, and then having the heavy rain actually fall precisely during the Mid-Fu period, indicates that even during the dry and hot Great Heat, there will be a time when sweet rain falls from heaven. Everything must wait for the right timing to succeed. Is it not your utmost sincere prayer that gives your hope something to rely on? The current hardship will surely be exchanged for future smoothness.
