Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 71
The 71st Lot: Xin Jia
Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune
Lot poem
Magpies chirp before the eaves reporting good news, Knowing you yearn to return from a thousand miles away. Embroidered curtains are tied again with mandarin duck ribbons, Yet leaves fall and frost flies as the coldness encroaches.
Story and textual notes
Magpies are good at reporting good news. A traveler is about to arrive, and they predict the good tidings. Thus, once the thought of returning is stirred, even if separated by a thousand miles, those who know can perceive it beforehand. As in Du Fu's poem, 'Magpies chirp at the brushwood gate, the returning guest arrives from a thousand miles,' this is the proof. Re-tying the mandarin duck ribbons represents the feelings of returning suddenly after a long separation. The falling leaves and fading frost correspond to the autumn and winter seasons. However, only after going through many hardships and eager anticipation is today finally achieved, so it is already late. Hence it says 'encroached by the evening twilight.' For the seeker, things will be accomplished, but it is difficult to expect early fulfillment. The word 'again/double' may signify remarriage, and other matters can also be interpreted as happening in two stages.
Interpretation
The bird announcing good news chirps before the eaves, predicting the imminent return of the one away from home. The room is decorated with wedding curtains again, indicating starting anew or remarrying. However, although the long-awaited person has returned, it is already the time of falling leaves and fading frost, representing autumn/winter or one's later years. The twilight encroaching means everything is already too late. This lot indicates that the matter inquired about cannot be achieved in early years and will inevitably be delayed to later years or the autumn and winter seasons, and it carries the meaning of starting over again.
Traditional summary
Lawsuits should be settled amicably; fame and reputation will gradually open up; marriage can be reconciled again; illness is highly unfavorable; seeking wealth is not yet the right time; all plans and aspirations will be realized in autumn and winter.
