Remembering the past when we split the hairpin in the lady's chamber, Now suddenly all news and messages have gone awry. Fondly hoping to join together as one, Who would have known that in the end, things would not harmonize.
Story and textual notes
The lady's chamber refers to the private room of a woman. Splitting a hairpin means each holding half of the hairpin as a pledge of faith. The intimacy at the beginning of human relationships is mostly like this. The disruption of messages indicates a change of heart, a fickle and changeable attitude. From this, it is clear that this marriage can no longer be united and this matter can no longer succeed. Joining together refers to the union of husband and wife. Fondly hoping means being constantly obsessed, trapping oneself in delusion. Planning a marriage that cannot be united, and pursuing a matter that cannot succeed, will ultimately yield no results. Onlookers have known this long ago, but the person involved is miserably unaware. Divining this lot, one should know to turn back.
Interpretation
The verbal covenant has been completely broken, and what was promised can no longer be fulfilled. To still fondly hope to become husband and wife is something everyone knows is impossible, yet you alone are bent on trying to salvage it, which will only bring you immense pain.
