Three thousand laws and eight thousand articles, How can this matter be explained to you? The two paths of good and evil are of your own making, A lifetime of fortune and misfortune is divided herein.

Legal codes are books of punishment. 'Three thousand' refers to the articles of crime. 'Eight thousand' refers to the number of characters. Life, death, leniency, and severity are all decided by the judicial authorities, and are not for outsiders to know or interfere with. Thus it says: 'How can this matter be explained to you?' Yet, what is unknowable can indeed be known; it is determined solely by the two paths of good and evil. Good and evil are committed by oneself, so fortune and misfortune are also sought by oneself. Therefore, in all things, one should strive to do good and eliminate evil. Sacred meaning: This is profoundly clear and bright; people should hold it in awe.
Interpretation
The three thousand laws refer to the articles of crime, and the eight thousand characters refer to the content of the legal codes. These are things ordinary mortals cannot comprehend, nor can they know them in advance. Future fortune and misfortune are entirely decided by the good and evil one does now. The gods and Buddhas cannot pray for more blessings for you; only your own cultivation can affect your fortune. The fortune and misfortune of a lifetime are determined by the good and evil of one's own actions, not by others. This lot indicates that the deities cannot offer help; future fortune and misfortune have already been determined by oneself. To seek fortune and avoid disaster, it is better to eliminate evil and practice good deeds. The fortune or misfortune of this lot lies entirely in individual actions.
