Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 77
Lot 77: Xin-Geng
Traditional fortune label: Moderately Unfavorable
Lot poem
Trees have roots and water has a source, You should trace and investigate the origin from here. Do not listen to the gossip of people on the road, That lawsuits end in misfortune is an absolute truth.
Story and textual notes
Trees with roots grow vigorously, and water with a source flows long. This is true for the laws of physics, and also for human affairs. Just as goodness is the source of blessing, benevolence is the source of longevity, and studying and accumulating wealth are the sources of fame and wealth. Once the source is attained, all things will be orderly. This is what people should investigate in their hearts. The voices of people at the crossroads are often slanderous, absurd, and untrustworthy. If one listens to them temporarily and gets involved in a lawsuit, they will surely be deficient in reason and fall short in planning. This is the path to ultimate misfortune. Should people not be careful at the beginning?
Interpretation
Trees must take deep roots to stand firmly, and flowing water must have a source to flow endlessly. This is an unchanging principle of all things under heaven and earth. You must investigate the causes yourself; doing good and avoiding evil will bring good fortune and avert disaster, and being benevolent will lead to a long life. Never listen to hearsay or gossip. The words of bystanders might sound reasonable, but they are actually artful and deceitful. If you get involved in lawsuits because of them, misfortune will follow. Remember not to get involved in litigation, close your ears to others' rumors, and cultivate virtue and goodness from the root; this is the most fundamental principle.
Traditional summary
Avoid lawsuits; pray for illnesses; fame is unfavorable; marriage is hard to grow old together; guard against gossip; the traveler will arrive; be cautious in all matters and do not be impetuous.
