Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 89
Lot 89: Ren Ren
Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune
Lot poem
Drink before your cup, sing aloud and be free from care, When the time has not yet come, what else can you do? The white horse crosses the river, neighing in the sunset, Inside the Tiger-Head City, behold the towering grandeur.
Story and textual notes
Singing before the wine cup advises people to divert their own minds. When one is in poverty and adversity, and fortune has not yet arrived, one can only yield and endure, forcing a smile to make merry, and gradually find relief. If one becomes anxious and angry, traps will be everywhere and the path will be full of thorns. What can be done then? The white horse crossing the river is proof of gaining the right timing later on. Inside the Tiger-Head City is the place of encounter later on. Sunset represents the late years of life. Towering grandeur means high and magnificent. Boundless honor and happiness lie ahead, temporarily like a dragon waiting in the depths.
Interpretation
At present, you have not yet achieved your ambition, but you must not be depressed. It is better to distract yourself and sing for joy, waiting patiently for the right time. When you finally gain power, it will be in your later years, yet you will still obtain the highest fame and fortune. This lot indicates that you must endure and wait. If you cannot wait with an optimistic mind, you will live in regret all your life and ruin the good fortune of your later years. 'White horse' also represents time, referring to the Year of the Horse or Month of the Horse, which will be the time to turn your luck around.
