Lot poem
Do not complain that marriage and children come late, Just hold your faith and focus on the Buddha. Recompense must come for what was sown in the past forty years, When your merits are complete, you will be blessed with a fine child.
Story and textual notes
Marriage and children are major events in life. Regardless of whether they come early or late, they will eventually be achieved. Relying solely on the support of gods and Buddhas, misfortune can turn into good fortune, and what was absent can become present. 'Forty years ago' refers to reviewing past deeds, which must receive their recompense; there is still hope for a wonderful reward. Helping others and benefiting things is called 'merit' (gong). Reflecting on oneself and cultivating virtue is called 'conduct' (xing). When 'merit' is complete (yuan), it is broad and vast. When 'conduct' is full (man), one's behavior is thorough and thoughtful. A 'fine child' (xin er) is an extraordinary and promising child, a gift from the gods and Buddhas, and a reward for accumulating virtue. Human effort can move heaven in this way; how can one not strive?
Interpretation
Marriage and childbirth are major life events. In these areas, you will achieve them relatively late, but there will still be results. Do not complain. You can place your faith in the deities and perform good deeds, which will bring good fortune. Your current recompense is the accumulation of the cause and effect of the past forty years; that is, your current fortune or misfortune is the result of your past good or evil. Because you have consistently performed good deeds in the past, when your merits are complete, you will be blessed with a fine child. Do not force anything; everything is the result of your own accumulation.
