At fifty, the heart is already indifferent to fame and accomplishments, Who would have known that wealth and honor would press upon you? Perform more good deeds and keep them in your heart, Your life will be as long as the hills, and your position as high as a minister.
Story and textual notes
Fifty is a time when physical strength is declining. One becomes indifferent to fame and has no ambition to advance. 'Wealth and honor pressing upon you' means good times are just ahead. 'Perform more good deeds' means accumulating virtue to receive heaven's blessings. 'Keep them in your heart' means cultivating virtue to invite divine protection. 'Life as long as the hills' means increasing longevity, as stable and secure as the hills. 'Ding' refers to the pillars of the state, and 'Tai' refers to the Three Platforms, representing the nobility of prime ministers and high officials. All of these can only be achieved by accumulating good deeds. Although it is called heaven's decree, is it not determined by human actions?
Interpretation
After passing the age of fifty, you are about to lose hope in fame and wealth. How could you know that delayed wealth and honor would come one after another? With prosperity ahead, you must perform more good deeds to accumulate blessings and keep good intentions in your heart at all times. By doing so, your lifespan will be extended and your status will be elevated. This lot indicates that all achievements are realized late in life. After middle age, wealth and honor will arrive unbidden. Keeping good deeds in your heart is the best way to maintain wealth. Henceforth, everything will go smoothly and as desired.
