Lot poem
Meeting a noble person in the land of water and clouds, Though the relationship seems plain, its flavor is long-lasting. When the Prime Minister's hall opens to welcome old guests, The noble steed shall gallop along the broad highway.
Story and textual notes
The 'land of water and clouds' refers to a place where both the noble and the humble travel. A 'noble person' refers to someone who will become prominent in the future, though at this time they are not recognized as such. Therefore, they associate in poverty, and the circumstances appear very plain. However, their friendship is deeply compatible and has a meaningful flavor, unlike the fickle relationships of opportunists. 'Huangge' refers to the office of the Prime Minister. In the Han Dynasty, Gongsun Hong had the practice of opening his gates to invite guests; this is used as a metaphor for what a friend does when they achieve their ambitions. It means that with their assistance, one will be like a swift horse running straight onto a broad highway, galloping ahead. 'Hualiu' (the noble steed) can also refer to the year, month, or day of the Horse (Wu), or the direction of Wu, or a person born in the year of Wu, which can also be verified in minor ways.
Interpretation
A friend met in a foreign land, whose future status as a noble or official is unknown, is at this time equally poor. Therefore, the friendship is based entirely on character, allowing you to make a true, lifelong friend. In the future, when they become a high-ranking official, they will surely assist you, and you will share wealth and honor together. This lot indicates that only in times of poverty can true sincerity be felt. A friendship that does not change with status is a true friendship. It signifies rising to success with the assistance of a friend.
