Story and textual notes
The cuckoo is said to be the incarnation of Du Yu, the Emperor of Shu. The 'Records of Thirteen Prefectures' states: when the Seven States claimed kingship, Du Yu alone ruled Shu as Emperor, known as Emperor Wang. Later, Emperor Wang sent a minister named Bie Ling to manage the waters of Mount Wu, which was successful. Feeling his own talent and virtue were inferior to Bie Ling's, Emperor Wang abdicated the throne to Bie Ling, left his country, and transformed into a cuckoo (Zigui).
Interpretation
Zigui is the cuckoo. The cuckoo, longing for its homeland, cries repeatedly, and its tears turn into azalea flowers. The traveler in a foreign land is awakened by the cuckoo's cry on a cold night, which further triggers homesickness. Although this oracle lot is most unfavorable, being careful and cautious can help turn danger into safety.
