The 28th Oracle Lot: Bai Juyi Listens to the Pipa

Traditional fortune label: Moderate

Lot poem

The boat anchors at Xunyang under a moonlit sky, A single pipa tune moves one to pity. On whom can we rely to send our mutual yearning across two places, As white snow prematurely turns the hair at our temples gray.

Story and textual notes

While bidding farewell to a guest at night by the Xunyang River, Bai Juyi heard a beautiful pipa performance from a boat. Following the sound to meet the player, he found a disappointed woman. 'We are both downcast souls at the ends of the earth; why must we have met before to understand each other?' Moved by his own exile and the pipa player's plight, Bai Juyi wrote the famous long poem 'Song of the Pipa' (Pipa Xing).

Interpretation

This is another oracle lot related to the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi. However, this is Moderate, whereas the 24th lot is Most Unfavorable. The difference is that the 24th lot suffers from loneliness, while this one is Moderate because there is at least a fleeting moment of joy. Although there is happiness in this oracle lot, it is extremely brief. It is advisable to cultivate oneself and patiently endure. While there is no major harm, there is also nothing to rejoice about; in all matters, misfortune outweighs good fortune.

Traditional summary

No achievement or fame, wealth is hard to seek, travelers have not arrived, the household faces hardship, for marriage the woman is not ideal, pregnancy results in a daughter, illness recovers slowly, profit from sericulture and livestock is minimal, and plans and hopes have no merit.
