When the sky clears, white butterflies flutter to dry their wings, And before the courtyard, a battalion of ants is seen in array. Their ranks are orderly as they advance or retreat, Sometimes dispersing and sometimes gathering, how exquisite is their coordination.
Story and textual notes
This lot uses butterflies and ants sensing the seasons to represent the painstaking efforts and wisdom of King Goujian of Yue in restoring his kingdom. It implies that following the trends and letting things take their natural course makes success easier. When the weather clears, butterflies dry their wings dampened by rain and dew. When the weather is hot, before a rainstorm arrives, ants form orderly ranks to advance or retreat, their formations dispersing and gathering.
