The trees of Mount Niu are naturally beautiful, Yet sadly, the axemen have logged them all. Great materials for great structures are now insufficient, If the compass and square are inaccurate, how can things be fashioned?
Story and textual notes
Lu Ban, a man of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period, invented various woodworking and construction tools and is revered as the patron saint of the construction industry. He once instructed his disciples not to log timber recklessly, which caused the once abundant Mount Niu to become barren and bald, leaving not a single suitable material to be used.
Interpretation
The main meaning of this oracle lot is that although one originally possessed very good conditions, due to improper management, the advantages were lost unconsciously. By the time human, financial, and material resources are urgently needed, one realizes that nothing is left. It suggests that one must cherish resources, guard against ill-intentioned people, and discard bad habits.
