Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 4

Lot 4: Dong Yong Meets a Fairy

Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune

Lot poem

A purple swallow trains its fledglings before the eaves, Whispering and twittering to each other as midday approaches. Coming and going, dipping and rising again, Occasionally cutting through the green willow mist.

Story and textual notes

Dong Yong was a native of Qiancheng. He lost his mother at a young age and raised his father alone. He drifted to Xiaogan. When his father died, he had no means for a burial, so he borrowed 10,000 coins from someone, agreeing to sell himself into slavery if he could not repay it in the future. One day, while gathering firewood on the mountain, he fell asleep from exhaustion. Heaven saw his filial piety and sent a fairy down to marry him. Upon waking, Dong Yong saw the woman and feared she was a demon. The woman stopped him, saying she had no parents and no one to depend on, and wished to become husband and wife. Seeing her pitiful state, Dong Yong took her back. The master accused Dong Yong of abducting a woman and bringing trouble to his household. Later, the woman was temporarily allowed to stay. After searching everywhere and finding no family reporting a missing woman, they were finally permitted to marry. Dong's wife wove fifty Zhang of brocade in a hundred days. She cut half of it to sell in the market for silver, redeeming Dong Yong from slavery. Later, the brocade was presented to the Emperor, and he was imperial-decreed as the 'Treasure-Presenting Scholar'.

Interpretation

This oracle lot describes a natural spring scene observed by Dong Yong and the fairy. It depicts swallows flying back and forth before the eaves, searching for food and returning to the nest to feed the next generation. What is comforting is that to raise their young, swallows will surely choose a relatively safe environment to build their nests. The first two lines of the poem, where the mother swallow whispers with her chicks before the eaves, present a sign of peace. The last two lines serve as a reminder: the fledglings' parents fly back and forth, high and low, to search for food, hinting that your fortune will rise and fall, being good at times and bad at others, with potential fluctuations during the year.
