Nineteen years of hardship by the sea, The credentials' tassels decayed and scattered in the sand and dust. Eating felt and chewing snow, who pities me? Only the sheep are there to keep me company.
Story and textual notes
Su Wu, a loyal minister of the Han Dynasty. Emperor Wu sent him as an envoy to the Xiongnu, where he was detained by the foreign king Chanyu, who coerced and bribed him to defect and surrender. Su Wu refused to yield and was exiled to herd sheep at the North Sea. The sheep he herded were all rams; the foreign king ordered that unless he changed his mind, or the rams could give birth, he would not be released.
Interpretation
Su Wu drank snow and ate grass seeds, enduring nineteen years in the wind and snow before he could return to his homeland. Emperor Xuan granted him the title of Marquis of Guannei. The text fully describes the hardships of Su Wu herding sheep, where for nineteen years like a single day, he held the Han Dynasty envoy's staff tightly every day while herding sheep, and finally even the tassels of the staff were blown away by the wind before he could return. To obtain this oracle lot, one must be loyal and upright in heart, bear sufferings patiently, and everything will be helped by gods to turn danger into safety. With Su Wu's loyalty, he eventually returned to Han to serve as an official. Regarding the oracle lot, everything is extremely difficult, but in the end, the goal can be achieved.
