Boyi and Shuqi could not bear to eat Zhou's grain; the brothers willingly gathered ferns for their meals. Their relinquishment of the state should make their names endure for eternity, yet pitifully they starved to death on Mount Shouyang.
Story and textual notes
Boyi and Shuqi were the two sons of the ruler of Guzhu during the Shang Dynasty. The ruler bypassed the eldest to appoint the youngest, Shuqi, as the successor. However, Shuqi resolutely wanted to yield it to his elder brother, and Boyi also refused to accept it. As a result, both gave up the opportunity to be kings and fled to the Zhou State one after the other.
Interpretation
When King Wu of Zhou overthrew Shang, Boyi and Shuqi held his horse's bridle to remonstrate. After Zhou destroyed Shang, the two felt ashamed to eat Zhou's grain and fled to Mount Shouyang, gathering wild ferns to satisfy their hunger, eventually starving to death. Boyi and Shuqi have always been revered by intellectuals as examples of noble integrity. However, obtaining this oracle lot belongs to a mixture of good and bad fortune, with a hidden worry of losing luck. One should first establish a kind heart, endure suffering patiently, experiencing difficulties first followed by ease. This oracle lot holds misfortune within good fortune; one must be cautious.
