Lot 47: Lu Su Demands Jingzhou

Traditional fortune label: Moderate

Lot poem

Traveling thousands of miles from afar to Western Shu, to ask when Jingzhou will be returned. Liu Bei utters no word but sheds tears, pondering his lack of means to negotiate with Wu.

Story and textual notes

During the Three Kingdoms period of Wei, Shu, and Wu (represented by Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan), Liu Bei followed Zhuge Liang's advice to ally with Wu against Wei. In the beginning, before Liu Bei established the foundation of the Kingdom of Shu in the Sichuan area, he borrowed Jingzhou from Sun Quan as a temporary shelter. Eastern Wu repeatedly sent Lu Su to request its return, but Liu Bei made various excuses and used delaying tactics, claiming that he had no choice and could not return Jingzhou for the time being. This is the origin of the allusion 'Liu Bei borrows Jingzhou—never to return it.'

Interpretation

Liu Bei borrowed Jingzhou from Wu. After Liu Bei acquired Shu, Eastern Wu sent an envoy to Western Shu to demand the return of Jingzhou. Before saying a word, Liu Bei wept bitterly, reflecting on his lack of strategy to resolve the situation. He managed to delay the return through crying, keeping what was borrowed. Weeping represents a scene of grief and worry. For those who draw this lot, one must endure hardship with patience and do more good deeds to turn misfortune into blessings. Generally speaking, this lot portends more danger than safety. This oracle lot carries the omen of borrowing without returning and weeping; the seeker should carefully contemplate its meaning.

Traditional summary
