Lot 48: Zhuo Wenjun Sells Wine

Traditional fortune label: Moderate

Lot poem

Listening to the lute in her embroidered chamber, her thoughts arose; changing her attire in the dead of night, it was the happiest time. Alas, selling wine in the market of Linqiong, the talented scholar and beautiful lady both work in the kitchen.

Story and textual notes

Zhuo Wenjun was an extraordinary woman of the Western Han dynasty, whose grandfather was King Zhuo. Wenjun was skilled at playing the lute and open-minded. Shortly after her husband's death, she met the talented scholar Sima Xiangru. They fell in love at first sight and eloped as husband and wife. Later, disregarding public gossip, the couple returned to her hometown and opened a tavern in a bustling market. Sima Xiangru worked in the kitchen while Zhuo Wenjun tended the stove and sold wine, which became a celebrated tale. Though they were a poor couple, they remained joyful despite all hardships.

Interpretation

Zhuo Wenjun and Sima Xiangru opened a wine stall, one a talented scholar and the other a beautiful lady. When Zhuo Wenjun heard Sima Xiangru's seductive lute playing at night, she decided to elope with him in the dead of night. Both had to work at the stove and sell wine, showing a sign of hard work, though Sima Xiangru later attained great nobility. This oracle lot depicts the period when Wenjun was recently widowed, and the couple later sold wine together in the Linqiong market, working hand in hand. For those who draw this lot, one must endure hardships patiently; it is difficult at first but easier later. This lot is neither auspicious nor inauspicious, bringing only a state of mediocrity.
