Story and textual notes
This is a sorrowful and lingering historical story. It describes Emperor Houzhu of the Chen Dynasty, a romantic and ruined emperor who was lustful and foolish, infatuated all day with Consort Zhang and Consort Kong, neglecting state affairs. Later, Emperor Wen of Sui mobilized troops to invade, and Chen Houzhu's state collapsed amidst clashing swords and halberds. Holding his two favorite concubines in each arm, Chen Houzhu fled east and west, but found no way of escape. He had to hide inside the Rouge Well. When the Sui soldiers reached the inner palace, they discovered their tracks and pulled them up with a rope.
