One must know of the ancient figure who guarded the rear during a retreat, Entering the city gate, he whipped his horse and did not boast of his capability. Who in a defeated army is willing to run at the very end? Yet he made the excuse that his horse was tired and feared the hardship.
Story and textual notes
Meng Zhifan, a native of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn period, served as a high official. Once, Lu was defeated by Qi, and the Lu army scrambled to retreat to the city in a chaotic frenzy. However, Meng Zhifan insisted on guarding the rear. When he was the last to withdraw into the city gate, everyone praised his courage and care for others.
Interpretation
For in ordinary circumstances, who in a defeated army would willingly run at the very end? However, Meng Zhifan possessed an even greater character; amid the praise of others, he humbly said, 'I am not brave, it is just that my horse was too tired, and no matter how I whipped it, it refused to run!' Confucius highly praised Meng Zhifan's bravery and benevolence. Those who draw this lot must endure insults and be patient with others, avoid arguing, and treat people with virtue and an open mind. In this way, they can turn misfortune into good luck.
