Wong Tai Sin Fortune Sticks · Lot 72
The 72nd Oracle Lot: Gao Wending Beset by Hardship
Traditional fortune label: Moderate
Lot poem
Waiting so long for a rabbit, what is the point? How sigh-worthy is the foolish man who guards the tree stump alone. Such incompetence makes me laugh; There is no need to cling to old ways and restrict yourself.
Story and textual notes
In the State of Song, there was a farmer who by chance encountered a wild rabbit running, which crashed into a tree stump. He picked it up, took it home, and slaughtered it for food. From then on, he stopped farming every day and just sat by the tree stump, waiting for another rabbit to arrive. This story is also used to describe people like Gao Wending, who cling conservatively to outmoded practices.
Interpretation
There was an ancient man who guarded a tree and waited for a rabbit; he waited for a very long time, but no rabbit came. Yet he still guarded the tree and did not leave. His foolishness and lack of capability are truly laughable. One should not be rigid and conservative. If one blindly clings to the old, although no great harm may come, it is ultimately of no benefit. Why then behave like this? The oracle says: What is the point of spending so much time waiting for a rabbit? This foolish man guarding the stump is truly pitiful. His incompetence is indeed laughable. Why should a person be so conservative and restrict themselves? For those who draw this oracle lot, although there is no major harm, it is difficult to expect any great achievements in the short term. It is a sign of being trapped and finding it hard to meet a benefactor. One should immediately cultivate good deeds to move the hearts of others. Later, a benefactor will surely come to promote you and turn misfortune into blessing. The earlier, the better, just as a fish out of water cannot wait for long. This oracle lot brings more misfortune than fortune; what is currently undecided depends entirely on human effort.
Traditional summary
Wealth is hard to obtain, the traveler returns late. Plans and hopes cannot be accomplished. Silkworms and livestock yield little profit. Pregnancy is without obstacle, but marriage is unsuitable. When asking about illness, one should change doctors. The house is safe; cultivating good deeds brings beauty.
