The 74th Oracle Lot: Zhu Maichen Divorces His Wife
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
Recalling the years when fortune was obstructed, Husband and wife turned against each other and separated. After returning with one's name inscribed on the Wild Goose Pagoda, Is it not sad to try to scoop up spilled water by the horse?
Story and textual notes
Zhu Maichen, a scholar of the Han dynasty, was originally very poor. His wife, unwilling to starve with him for a lifetime, demanded a divorce. Later, Zhu Maichen became a high-ranking official, and his wife requested a reunion. Zhu Maichen poured a basin of water onto the ground and said: 'If you can gather all this water back into the basin, we shall reunite!' This is the origin of the idiom 'spilled water cannot be gathered back' (what is done cannot be undone).
Interpretation
Recalling those years when my fortune was blocked, husband and wife fell out and got divorced. Now that I have returned in glory with my name inscribed on the Wild Goose Pagoda, you request to reconcile. Look at the water I poured on the ground, is there any way to gather it back? What a pity! For those who draw this oracle lot, one must endure suffering in all matters, as there will surely be a day of prosperity in the future. If you cannot establish a firm resolve and seek to change whenever encountering unfavorable events, you will surely regret your mistake when it is too late to reverse. Regarding this lot, it brings misfortune without good fortune; one must be aware of the signs of the times.
Traditional summary
