Story and textual notes
Gongye Chang was an extraordinary person in ancient times who could understand the language of birds. One day, when his family was poor and had no rice for the pot, a bird flew to him and said: 'Gongye Chang, on the South Mountain a tiger is dragging a sheep; you eat the meat, and I will eat the intestines.' Upon hearing this, Gongye Chang immediately went to the South Mountain and indeed saw a sheep. He scared away the tiger, left the intestines for the bird to eat, and brought the mutton back home. Unexpectedly, someone grew jealous and falsely accused him of stealing the sheep. Although he was imprisoned, he was ultimately innocent. Later, the bird managed to rescue him, and Gongye Chang was cleared of the charges.
