Oracle Lot 76: Confucius Cultivated Himself and Did Not Disdain Poverty
Traditional fortune label: Moderate Oracle Lot
Lot poem
If a person can rejoice in the Dao and cultivate themselves, How could they disdain poverty when drinking water and using a bent arm as a pillow? Wealth and honors obtained through unrighteousness, Are to my heart nothing but passing clouds.
Story and textual notes
This is a depiction of the Sage Confucius cultivating himself, finding joy in the Dao, and being content with poverty. The value of a person lies in aspiring to truth and justice, constantly seeking knowledge, and cultivating their character. Even if the current environment is unfavorable, with simple food and coarse water, or even sleeping with one's arm as a pillow, we should not give up on ourselves.
Interpretation
For those who acquire wealth and honor through unrighteous means, in my heart, they are merely passing clouds. For those who obtain this oracle lot, although your great fortune may not have arrived yet, as long as you uphold your principles and stand firm in your position, there will eventually come a day when you achieve positive results. Those who draw this lot must endure and accept hardships without resentment. One should also joyfully perform good deeds, cultivate character, and accumulate virtue. Hold onto yourself, do not be greedy or scheming, and be content with poverty and joyful in the Dao. With a heart free of complaints, a beautiful future surely awaits, which can be foretold without worry or doubt.
Traditional summary
Do not seek fame and fortune; silkworms and livestock will yield little profit; the traveler has not yet returned; if asking about marriage, they are not a good match; pregnancy is safe; the household is ordinary; plans and hopes are discussed in vain.
