Celestial Lot 81: Zi Lu Bows to the Pheasant
Traditional fortune label: Good Fortune Celestial Lot
Lot poem
The female pheasant on the mountain ridge finds her season, Flying up and down, chirping and enjoying herself. Alert to movements, she takes flight before roosting, Uttering three cries, she glides over the mountain slope.
Story and textual notes
Confucius and his disciple Zi Lu saw a female pheasant by the mountainside. Extremely alert and sharp, it hopped up and down among the leaves, chirping happily. However, the moment it sensed any unusual movement in the surroundings, it immediately flew away, returning only when it was certain of safety. As it flew off, it cried three times and disappeared into the wilderness.
Interpretation
Since Confucius is revered as the Supreme Sage, the female pheasant singing and dancing before him is also called 'paying homage'. According to the oracle, there will be a period of good prospects, but one must be alert to opportunities and changes, knowing when to avoid potential crises. Drawing this lot calls for reflection on the situation. One must understand the times and be tactful. When encountering unfavorable situations or changes in tide, turn and retreat immediately. Seek a solid footing and stay only where it is safe and secure. Beware of others trying to harm you or falling into a trap without knowing; hence, guard against petty people and gossip.
Traditional summary
