The Sage plays the stone chime in the State of Wei, Who would expect a man carrying a wicker basket to pass the gate? Sighing at the earnest desire to rescue the declining Way, Alas, the days and months are now passing away.
Story and textual notes
The story of Confucius playing the stone chime (qing) warns us to cherish our youth and do what needs to be done in a timely manner. Otherwise, old age will arrive, leaving us willing but unable. When the Sage Confucius was playing the stone chime in the State of Wei, someone carrying a bamboo basket passed by the door. From the sound of the chime, they discerned Confucius's aspiration to save the world and its people. Unfortunately, time was not on his side, and the years slipped away.
Interpretation
For those who draw this lot, kindness and harmony are most valuable in all matters. Do not refuse to do a good deed because it is small, nor commit an evil deed because it is minor. In life, seize and cherish today. One should make saving others their duty, whether by donating money or contributing effort; do whatever benefits others.
