Cutting her hair to welcome guests, how poor indeed, Who else could be such a virtuous wife in poverty? From ancient times to now, there is only Tao Kan's mother, Whose name is left to be heard through ten thousand generations.
Story and textual notes
Tao Kan, a high official of the Jin Dynasty who possessed both virtue and talent, started as a county clerk. Due to his outstanding performance, he was gradually promoted to General of the Expedition to the West, Governor of Jing and Jiang Provinces, and military commander of eight provinces. Serving as an official for forty years, he remained consistent every single day, never greedy, never drinking, never gambling, and never wasting even a single piece of paper or wood.
Interpretation
This lot tells of Tao Kan's youth, when his family was poor and had no money to receive guests. Tao's mother was highly virtuous and resolutely cut off her long hair to sell it. Such a virtuous wife, throughout ancient and modern times, only Tao's mother existed, and she is worthy of admiration for generations. Obtaining this lot suggests that there may be a better environment in the future, but for now, one must find a way to hold on for a period. In all matters, one must endure and wait for the right time. Although extremely poor and destitute, if one maintains an upright heart, there will eventually be benefits in the future. If facing difficulties now, one must never act recklessly or out of line.
