The Qiang flute blows repeatedly with an ever sadder melody, Being a guest in a foreign land makes the return date feel remote. If the solitary wild goose flying from the south pities me, Please deliver a letter home to let my family know.
Story and textual notes
Cai Wenji, a person of the Eastern Han Dynasty, was abducted by Xiongnu soldiers and married the Worthy King of the Left. She only returned to the Han land twelve years later.
Interpretation
If this lot is drawn in spring or summer, one should seek fortune and avoid harm early. The Qiang flute blows frequently beyond the border, its tune making one even more sorrowful. It makes the traveler in a foreign land realize that the day of returning home is indefinitely remote. This is a desolate scene; those who draw this oracle lot in autumn or winter should be especially careful. If the solitary wild goose flying from the south pities me, please constantly deliver family letters to my relatives in my hometown. In this environment, one must first take care of oneself, preserve strength, and wait for the turn of fortune. Drawing this oracle lot, one should be cautious in all matters, pay more attention in autumn, and pray to Tin Hau (the Empress of Heaven) for blessings and good fortune.
