Snow blankets the bridge, and the horse will not move forward, The wind is wild, and the fisherman should not sail the boat. Water flows and flowers wither, who will pity them, Establish a firm mind early and do not let your determination waver.
Story and textual notes
Han Xiangzi, one of the Eight Immortals, was Han Yu's grandnephew. He once used magic in early winter to make peonies bloom, with each flower bearing a character. Combined, they read: 'Clouds span the Qin Mountains—where is my home? Snow blankets Lan Pass—my horse will not go forward.' Han Yu did not understand its meaning. Soon after, because he remonstrated against welcoming the Buddha's bone, he angered the Emperor and was demoted to the Prefect of Chaozhou. On his way, he encountered a blizzard; his horse would not move forward, and the boatman would not sail. Later, Han Xiangzi rushed to send him off, and Han Yu finally understood Han Xiangzi's prophecy.
Interpretation
This lot has the meaning of sighing over poor luck. Who will sympathize with falling flowers and flowing water? One can only rely on oneself to be firm in determination. Later, Han Yu achieved great administrative success in Chaozhou and was posthumously honored as 'Wengong'. When drawing this oracle lot, one must be cautious in all matters and guard against gossip and slander by petty people. Although this lot poses no major obstacles, there is also nothing to rejoice; being cautious will bring stability.
