Lot poem
Entering the mountains to plant jade, one complains the field is narrow, Digging the earth to seek gold, one dislikes that there are too many searchers. Wealth and poverty are destined by Heaven, Why should people of the world strive and toil so hard?
Story and textual notes
During the Spring and Autumn period, there were two intimate friends in adversity in the State of Qi: Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya. Even in poverty, they regarded money as dirt. Later generations used the phrase 'friendship of Guan and Bao' to praise true friendship.
Interpretation
This oracle lot uses the story of Guan and Bao dividing gold to advise people not to forget righteousness for the sake of benefit. The oracle lot says: a selfish person entering the mountain to harvest jade complains that their land is too narrow; digging the ground to seek gold, they dislike that there are too many searchers who will dilute their share. We should learn from Master Guan and Master Bao and understand that wealth and poverty are destined by Heaven long ago; why should people of the world toil for money? Drawing this lot, one should uphold righteousness and cultivate good fruits, and not become a slave to money. One should do one's best in all things, cultivate good deeds, and plant the foundation of blessings, and blessings will naturally come without forcing. As the saying goes, 'There is no need to deliberately seek beautiful scenery, for wonderful encounters naturally respond in early spring.'
