Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 55
The 55th Lot: Ji Wu
Traditional fortune label: Moderate
Lot poem
Diligently plow and labor, do not waste time, Live contentedly with food and clothing as they come. Even if commerce yields double profits, It is not as good as the increasing grain in the granary year by year.
Story and textual notes
Plow diligently and labor. This is the primary livelihood of a farming family. 'Do not waste time' warns against idling away one's years. 'Live contentedly as things come' warns against greedily seeking unexpected gains. 'Commerce yields double profits' is what those who chase minor things do, and it is ultimately unreliable. 'Increasing grain in the granary' means that farming families who work hard on their land will accumulate grain in their barns year by year, which is more stable than doing business. It is better for everyone to remain still rather than move, be diligent rather than lazy, be thrifty rather than extravagant, and be content rather than greedy. The seeker should examine this carefully.
Interpretation
If you work hard without slacking, you will live a good life with plenty of food and clothing. 'Plowing' refers to practical, hands-on work, not commerce. This lot warns against doing business; although doing business may yield greater returns, high-profit endeavors also carry high risks. The immediate profits come with hidden risks that could lead to even greater losses and unstable income. It is better to work in a stable job like a civil servant, where you can have a steady income. Over long-term accumulation, this is much better than doing business. This lot suggests that if you are currently in business, it is best to change professions to a public office with a stable income.
Traditional summary
Stop asking about trade; do not be greedy for wealth; lawsuits should be settled; illness will bring no disaster; marriage can be achieved; travelers will return; restrict going out, and blessings will naturally arrive.
