Lot poem
Why bother to play the lute and blow the sheng? Every single step feels like climbing a ten-thousand-mile journey. Doubting and distrusting each other, Do not let private thoughts dwell on past deep affection.
Story and textual notes
Playing the lute and blowing the sheng is a poem from the Xiaoya section of the Classic of Poetry to entertain guests. If they are not the right person, why bother doing this? Every step feels like ten thousand miles, meaning that even face-to-face, you cannot truly know each other. Suspecting each other indicates that this person is no longer fit to associate with, and this matter cannot be accomplished; you should cut ties immediately. If you let your private thoughts dwell on their past affection, not only will it be in vain, but you will also be further burdened. The words 'do not' are a prohibition, warning the querent to wake up quickly.
Interpretation
Although you interact with others with great enthusiasm, the other party is inconsistent in their words and deeds. They seem so close to you, but you can never know what they are thinking, making them seem quite like a stranger. If you are still trapped in the sweet affection of the past and immerse yourself in it, you will fall into eternal damnation. Since mutual suspicion has arisen, it is better to let it go and stop putting effort into this matter or this person. Perhaps the harm will end here, and it is best to wake up as soon as possible.
Traditional summary
No fame or achievements, wealth and prosperity disperse, illness is difficult to cure, guard against difficult childbirth, marriage cannot be formed, lawsuits are unresolved, travelers are delayed, sighing in vain.
