Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 83
Lot 83: Ren Bing
Traditional fortune label: Most Unfavorable
Lot poem
Contentedly head to the hall for a bowl of porridge; Why indulge in wild fantasies and suffer in anxiety? Managing a household is indeed a difficult task; In a hundred-year life, how many years of peace can one get?
Story and textual notes
Being content with porridge means that even simple meals are blessings of the human world, worthy of enjoyment. Wild fantasies refer to hoping for wealth and status beyond one's portion. Anxiety is self-inflicted misery. This means one should beware of wild fantasies and must not act this way. Managing a household means running a family, which is indeed difficult. Although the difficulty is known, how many years does a person have in a lifetime? Enjoying peace when possible is best. What is the point of toil and trouble for wild fantasies? Those who obtain this lot should know when to stop.
Interpretation
Even if it is just a bowl of plain porridge, you must know how to cherish it and reduce your desires to the minimum, so that you can adapt to any circumstance. If you blindly pursue wealth and fortune, it is merely wild fantasy, plunging yourself into painful torment. Trying to compare yourself with wealthy families is only making things harder for yourself; it is truly unattainable, so why make yourself suffer? In a short lifetime of a few years, what one seeks is a safe and peaceful life. Although material life is currently not abundant, your days are relatively quiet and leisurely. If you can find joy in this, is it not also very good?
