Guan Di Fortune Sticks · Lot 85
Lot 85: Ren Wu
Traditional fortune label: Moderate
Lot poem
Throughout spring, wind and rain blow dismally; For a traveler of a thousand miles, the road ahead is distant. Abandoning the few to join the many, you think you have succeeded; Why, then, does the return journey become so tedious and listless?
Story and textual notes
Dismal wind and rain describe muddy and unbearable conditions. A thousand-mile journey makes it even harder for the traveler. This indicates that the person's path is not yet clear, and movement faces many obstacles. 'Abandoning the few to join the many' means that a person does not know how to keep to their portion and wait for the right time, but blindly plots and schemes, thinking they have succeeded. Little do they know that fate is already determined, and it will ultimately be of no help. Departing out of greed, they still return listless; what benefit is there in that? How can one know how to advance but not how to retreat?
Interpretation
Currently, the path ahead is precarious and stormy, blocking your journey. However, rushing to depart before the storm clears only makes you suffer more; any movement will face obstacles. Seeing others' actions and rashly following them, only to find that things are not as easy as you imagined after arriving. No matter how you plan, you cannot match the predetermined fate, ending up in vain and returning in disappointment. What is the meaning of this? It would be better not to do it from the beginning, so you can still maintain a safe and peaceful life. This lot warns people not to only think about advancing while not knowing how to retreat; sometimes thinking about how to withdraw safely might be the best method.
