Weeping willows drape the bank, locking in the green mist, In the long days, rising thrice and sleeping thrice. Purple swallows fly back and forth in a dancing flurry, Slender and graceful in the wind, winning my affection.
Story and textual notes
Emperor Wen of Han, an emperor who administered benevolent governance and loved his people, reigned for twenty-three years. He implemented the policy of 'resting with the people,' reducing land taxes, labor service, and penal systems. After suppressing the rebellion of the Lü clan, the national economy and people's livelihood recovered, and agricultural production developed rapidly.
Interpretation
Emperor Wen of Han loved to admire the beautiful posture of weeping willows. To improve work efficiency, he adopted a segmented sleep method, sleeping and waking three times a day. Upon waking, he would admire the beautiful scenery of green willows draping the embankment and purple swallows flying among them. As willows sometimes droop and sometimes rise, with swallows flying back and forth in between, swaying in the wind, the scenery is delightful. Obtaining this celestial lot is a sign of everything going as wished; seeking plans will be smooth, and everything will be auspicious.
