For the love of peace and leisure, planting many bamboos, Buying spring wine and enjoying the rain in a thatched cottage. Lying drunk beside the apricot blossoms when inebriated, Fearing to hear the warbler startle a sound dream.
Story and textual notes
Su Dongpo, a writer, poet, and painter of the Song Dynasty, achieved outstanding success in poetry, lyrics, calligraphy, and painting, and was listed among the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties. However, his political career was bumpy, and he was banished multiple times, having also visited Huizhou in Guangdong Province. In his later years, he returned north, lived in seclusion, and devoted himself to landscapes, poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
Interpretation
The celestial lot describes Dongpo's elegant life in seclusion: for peace and leisure, he plants green bamboos all around his residence, entrusts his time to spring, hides in a thatched cottage to enjoy the rain, or sleeps beside the apricot blossoms after getting drunk, peacefully entering dreamland, most fearing being woken up by the singing of yellow warblers. This is a sign of ease and comfort.
